About Greenbriar Chapter of ABWA

In 1949, the first American Business Women Association (ABWA) was organized for the advancement of women. From the association, many chapters were organized. Greenbriar Chapter was organized in 1972.

The Greenbriar Chapter originally began as an all white organization, but that didn’t last long – for we had four aspiring young women to break the color line-namely; Dorothy Kelly, and the late Hazel Espana, the late Eva Mae Perkins, and the late Maude Roberts. These four dynamic women made history. Dorothy Kelly became the first black president, and Eva Perkins was elected in 1972 as the Chapter Woman of the Year and Delegate to the National Convention. All four are charter members of Greenbriar ABWA.During our 33 years of growth, the Greenbriar Chapter branched off and sponsored other chapters: The Airport, Onyx and DeVry. From the Onyx Chapter, our 1996-1997 National President, the Honorable Ms. Cathy Butler is a product of the Greenbriar Chapter.Over the years, the national organization allowed men to enter the association and our chapter was one of the first to enroll a man.Greenbriar Chapter has experienced many wonderful, positive, and successful accomplishments. We have provided financial support to college students in excess of $135, 000.00. We have provided leadership training, self-enhancement to our members in the form of convention attendance, local area council participation, workshops, seminars, and community involvement functions. Several workshops were facilitated by our own members who joined Greenbriar and developed their skills to leadership level.During the years our members have received numerous awards from our national association for outstanding accomplishments; i.e. Dorothy Kelly, A Golden Sapphire Inner circle member for sponsoring 35 members, and Gail Davenport an Emerald Inner Circle Member for sponsoring more than 25 members. The chapter has also earned the Star Award from National for many years for it’s personal and professional growth and development. Greenbriar is also a member of the local Atlanta Area Council which consists of all the ABWA chapters in the area. Our members are encouraged to attend all national conventions/workshops for the purpose of professional development. Greenbriar Chapter and other Atlanta chapters hosted the Convention 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The American Business Women’s Association is a great association to be affiliated with and we at Greenbriar will continue to carry on the mission of ABWA.
